April 5th Election Candidate Responses

School Board Candidates

Elmwood Community Schools

Veronica M. Haskell

1) I decided to run for the school board because I would like to be a part of the continuing "tradition of excellence" that has taken place with prior boards. I also believe the school board needs a female presence and with my working knowledge of a school district that I have, due to my prior employment alongside of a Superintendent, I feel that I am a viable candidate.

2) I would like the board to continue making the sound financial and educational decisions that it has been making in the past. I have no individual goals or hidden agenda--I just want our school district to continue performing in the exemplary way that it has thus far.

3) Making sure that the school board members whom are elected to this position are in a cohesive, open relationship with each other and with the superintendent and other administrators is the key to a successful school board. Keeping the highest of educational standards and values at the forefront and looking toward the future of education will foster those relationships among board members and administration.

4) I am an active volunteer in the community and have been the leader in several extra curricular activities for our students (i.e., I began the Elmwood soccer program through the YMCA, I organized a Girl Scout recruiting night and grew our town from 1 troop to 5, I was the music leader for Vacation Bible School three summers in a row, and I am an active member of the Elmwood United Methodist Church). I have also recently worked alongside the Superintendent of the Farmington School District for almost 4 years and with that experience comes a wealth of inside knowledge to the "workings" of a school district and educational system.

I would also like Elmwood residents to know that I have run my campaign with integrity, tact and respect for our school superintendent, administrators, current board members and prospective board members. I do not endorse the "citizens for a positive change" ads that have run in the Shopper for the last 2 weeks. I believe our school needs a cohesive team of people to continue the "tradition of excellence" and I pride myself on fostering those relationships and would be honored to serve on the Elmwood School Board.
