Land of Lincoln Awaits --- to be found all around you

Lincoln's Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery

Although the tour inside is a solemn walk, the cemetery and park nearby do offer a little opportunity for leg room. I walked my young sons over to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and then back to Lincoln's tomb. This may be a little too long a walk. I should relate a funny story this was in 1995. Newt Gingrich was prominently featured in the news, Time Magazine, etc. Since Newt has grayish hair, is a little pudgy, people have sometimes thought I resemble him. On this day the worker saw my sons and I walking up, she thought I was Newt. As I got closer I shook my head and said "I'm not him" The boys thought this the best part of the whole trip.

The memorial is a monument to Lincoln and the troops who came to his call for Union.

I think the memorial known as Lincoln's tomb is a visit that follows after the other Lincoln sites, but it certainly doesn't have to be done in that order. Oak Ridge Cemetery is 2 miles north of the downtown area. Most days a ten minute drive in Springfield. New Salem is about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield.
