If you are a kid you may find Lincoln by being able to run around. The New Salem historic site fits the bill. There is an adajent camp ground and picnic area. Woodall's Camping Guide
New Salem does not always have re-enactors present
New Salem is the reconstructed village that was Lincoln's home before he took up a law practice in Springfield. I enjoy it especially in the Fall. The State of Illinois reconstructed the village trying to situate it as it was in the 1830's. New Salem like many a town that started in pioneer Illinois winked out.
