HGTV a lesson in relationships

Children should not dominate a marriage, but just expect children to affect every decision. Children especially affect decisions about new window treatments and four-wheelers. Oh you can chart independent courses, but in truth a couple with children means the children will always be integral to a marriage, even when they are adults.

Successful couples find a way to incorporate their spouse’s family and friends. You can’t choose family, but setting limits is acceptable. First you need to be a strong couple, and then you can deal with each other’s friends and families. Your opinions, feelings, and priorities come before any outside influence. Your time, decisions, and activities need to be the right ones for your marriage.

And finally, a successful couple respects their partner’s differences.  They may not agree with the other’s priorities or wishes, but respecting the other’s opinion is bedrock of a good marriage.

These are the lessons I’ve learned from HGTV.  I wouldn’t offer my advice unless asked, and I try not to be too skeptical of young couples, now that I am old and jaded.

What tips or advice do you have for a new couple that you have learned along the way to make your marriage successful?  How do you feel about your answer?
