22 Days is a Lifetime

Northern FishIll Deer

There were five gallon cans full of photos of fish catches from Minnesota and Canada. My Uncle Bill who owned the camera is on the left. Bill had polio asa teenager and used crutches and heavy leg braces the rest of his life. Deer were less common in 1964, than now, Harry had just come back from living in California. The IL General Assembly opened the first modern deer season in 1957.

I left to run a tractor he went out to his garden. I had just barely got started with my day when John Cassiday came out and found me. Someone working over at Twomey's had seen him fall while working in the garden. I went back to Smithshire and ran over to garden. Harry was laying just as he had fallen there in the middle of the garden. The ambulance soon arrived from Roseville a former classmate Greg Hall was with it. He said I can give him oxygen, but I don't think it will help. I said no; it was obvious he was dead. He had had heart attacks before and must have been dead by the time he fell on the soft earth. The tilled soil always such a part of his life.
