Tis the Season ----for Bible School

I helped put on the Elmwood United Methodist Church’s Vacation Bible School.  It was a lot of fun and a big success.  We had a Harry Potter theme this year, as we did last year.  Organized around the Dumbledore quote, “Its … The Choices We Make … that truly show who we are....” Everyone pitched in and we were able to transform the inside of the church into a pretty good replica of the Great Hall where everyone meets at the beginning of each year at Hogwarts.  Every so often Dumbledore, the head of Hogwarts, himself would peek into a class room to see how things were going.  All the kids were really excited to meet him.

I was in charge of the games portion of the program.  My brother, Alex but I call him Jimmy, and I invented ground Qudditch, a game that is played on flying broomsticks in the popular children’s books.  It took creativity, some hard work, a vivid use of the imagination, but we got the game setup and everyone had a good time.  In order to set up the game we had to go buy some supplies, hula hoops, fishing line, gold spray paint, and duct tape. It was too complicated for some of the younger groups to play, so they played find the snitch. It was a fun week.

Donations from the Bible school went to Pleasant Hill School.

The next week one of my friends asked me to help at his Bible school, so now I have become a professional Bible School Consultant.

This time it was at Bethel Bible Church in Edwards. The first day we only had 15 kids but the next day it grew day to 32. Their theme was Treasures of the Nile, and of course was set in Egypt. I could tell lots of people worked hard on this, because the sanctuary looked just like the great pyramids of Egypt.  They even got a camel and a crocodile to come and help out.  Each day the camel and crocodile would tell the kids a little bit about the day’s lesson.

This time I helped with one of the classes.  It is a lot different from just doing the games portion, as I have done in the past.  It went okay; some of the kids were a little bit ornery, but I am a Bible School Consultant.

One of the kids had trouble paying attention; I said I would call him Jake if he didn’t mind me.  He didn’t mind me so I called him Jake.  The teacher of the class couldn’t remember his name and always called him Jamie.  Finally after a whole morning of this he said, “My name is Jake not Jamie.

On another day one of the teachers of the class walked by and one of the kids said, “You smell and you’re funny.” It was so off the wall, my friend and I both laughed so hard; we fell out of our chairs.  One of the troublemakers escaped from class and my friend and I went to look for him.  We walked out of the room and saw him hiding under a chair.  My friend said, “We sure don’t see that kid hiding under the chair over there.”  One of the other kids in the class said, “No, no he is under the chair - see him?” And again we both laughed really hard.

Although some of them can be a little mischievous at times, I have really enjoyed working with all the kids at the different Bible schools.  I have seen the kids learn so much in these past weeks and I have learned too.  It has been a good refresher course on the Bible stories that we were taught as children.  All in all it has been a very positive experience; even if at the same time a very tiring one.

Donations went to Wheels for the World a mision project to bring wheel chairs to under developed areas throughout the world.
