Nauvoo Original Story
Since the rebuilding of the original Mormon Temple by the LDS Church, this elegant building has dominated the vista atop the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The temple was completed in 2002; the original temple completed in 1846 as the Mormons were fleeing Nauvoo was severely damaged by arson in 1848 and a tornado in 1850.
The temple is now open only to worthy Mormons, but was toured by many outside the church in 2002 before the dedication.
