I was now 15 and could not understand how a foreign nation could hold America hostage. I remember the first Night Line with Ted Koppel. Time dragged and nothing was done. Remember, I was from a military family. I could not understand Carter's unwillingness to do something, anything. Then we had the collision of the helicopters. Carter was the man who laid the groundwork for my belief of the democrat party being weak on national security and not having the ability to manage the economy. I would not fully understand the dems. stances on taxes until I started working and saw how much of what I earned was taken away from me. Enter Ronald Reagan. He had a vision. He had a plan. He had convictions. He could explain his stances to the masses in a manner they would understand. He was the anti Carter. Strong on national security, belief in growing the economy through tax cuts and helped the people remember we were the greatest nation ever on the face of the earth. I am a Reagan conservative. I believe this country is great because of the people, not the government. I believe in a small federal government. I believe a heavy tax burden stifles the economy. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe for 95% of the population, we are where we are because of the decisions we make.
