Diabetics Can’t Have Coffee?by:Erik Davis Well here is some bad news for diabetics. If you have type II diabetes, then researchers say that caffeine may be bad for you. This just adds to the long list of things that diabetics can’t eat or drink. My grandfather was diagnosed with type II diabetes a few years ago, this means if he lost weight it might go away. He has tried to change his eating habits; this is drastic for him. He can no longer eat all the wonderful things that my grandmother cooks. Like pies, my grandmother makes wonderful pies (coconut cream, cherry, raspberry, chocolate meringue), but he is not supposed eat them. Even things like spaghetti or sweet corn have natural sugar which can raise your blood sugar. So I suppose this will just be one more thing that people with diabetes will have to adjust to. It just makes me stop and think about how serious a problem this is. First of all most people with type II diabetes are older folks. And what do older folks do? They drink coffee. Almost every senior citizen in Elmwood and certainly everyone In Smithshire where my grandpa lives gets up at 4:00 in the morning and goes to the local café and orders some toast and coffee or a couple of eggs, bacon and COFFEE --- Coffee by the gallon. <>Continued next column --- |

The restaurant went out of business in Smithshire a few years ago and I think it was because everyone just went there and ordered toast and coffee. So total one person would spend a $1.05 for the whole day. If old folks can’t drink coffee, I predict a total collapse of the world’s economy. I don’t know what we can do about it…Wait there is hope, Decaf. I think that there is some validity to this new finding. One of my grandfather’s best friends had type II diabetes. Billie B. was told by many a doctor not to eat this or not to eat that. He was bullheaded to say the least; Billie B. never paid attention to a word they said. His blood sugar stayed between the comfortable 240 mark and an outrageous 300 about all the time. I used to say that if he ever cut him self; he would bleed sugar crystals. <>Continued next column --- |
Billie B. was a WWII veteran having joined before Pearl Harbor when actually he was too young. After Bille B. survived the war in the Pacific he figured he didn’t need to listen to doctors. He lived for many years like this. I don’t know whether his death was related to his overly high blood sugar. If it was, he sure did survive for a long time with the problem. Billie B. went to Hardees’ and McDonalds’ everyday and drank coffee with his buddies, so you can make your own conclusions. Maybe that was why his blood sugar was always so high. He really didn’t eat a lot of sweets or anything with a lot of sugar in it. I sure hope they don’t say anything else is bad for people with type II diabetes I think my grandpa is down to about six different things he can eat and the millions of things he is not supposed to eat, but does.
